Profile:
Discovering that
your child has a disability can be an emotional rollercoaster.
Having someone to talk to, who has a similar experience, gives
a parent the freedom to express the emotions that many parents
feel as a natural part of coming to terms with their child's
disability. Acknowledging those feelings can help them to
process their experience and enable them to find better strategies
for supporting themselves and managing their situation.
In Sefton we have befrienders
with a wide range of experience and some who are active in
other support groups.
We are pleased to be
of support to a diverse group of professionals keen to develop
partnership opportunities with parents.
We have trained seven volunteers and are ready to offer befriending.
We have five volunteers waiting for the next training course.
We plan to begin a father's network in autumn 2009.
We plan to offer trained listeners to the parent support groups
in Sefton.
Our first Strengthening Families Training Course to professionals
is at Newfield Specialist College
on 17 September 2009. For further details on the Strengthening
Families training course and how
