Strengthening
Families Conference: Working together for
stronger families June 2008
Conference
summary
About the
day
The conference opened
with a live performance of the drama Stronger
and was followed by group sessions
allowing parents and professionals' time for reflection and
an opportunity to discuss the drama, the issues it raised
and current practice and experiences. Comments from group
sessions were fed-back in the open forum discussion and a
panel of actors and parents were available to answer questions
from the floor and share their personal experiences.
Following lunch, there
was an afternoon of speakers and presentations:
*Suzanne Jones talked about the work
of the Right
From the Start initiative
*
Wendy Hellowell, Ups and Downs Southwest,
shared her experiences as a parent and her success
of establishing a
family support,
friendship and information service.
*
Jane Anstell, Sleep
Scotland, introduced their sleep counselling service and
training.
The day was drawn to
a close with remarks from Scope's Chief Executive, Jon Sparkes.
Conclusions
The overall aim
of the conference was to raise awareness of the emotional
journey and pressures parents and families of disabled children
(or children with additional support needs) experience in
their daily lives.
The performance of
Stronger, the open forum discussion
and the group sessions were designed to highlight the emotions,
stress, pressure and joys; the highs & lows and ups &
downs; encourage empathic support and active listening between
parents and professionals. Hopefully this was achieved
and delegates have taken time to reflect on the day and the
impact it had on them personally and professionally.
Strengthening
Families would like to thank everyone for attending our ‘Working
